Face masks mysteriously appearing on doorsteps part of ‘brushing’ scam, Better Business Bureau says

LOS ANGELES – Scams have become part and parcel of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the latest one being face masks reportedly appearing in residents’ mailboxes.

According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), consumers have reported receiving box loads of merchandise on their doorsteps allegedly labeled from Amazon and other retailers.

“Often, the items received are lightweight and inexpensive to ship, such as ping pong balls, or more recently, face masks or seeds from China,” the BBB writes in a report published on Aug. 3, 2020.

The scam is called “brushing,” and while it involves an array of different items, the scammer’s goals are relatively the same.

“The fact that someone was able to have the items sent to you as if you purchased them indicates that they probably have some of your personal information such as your name, address, and possibly, your phone number,” BBB writes.

The scheme involves companies, typically third party over-sea sellers, who send items to addresses found online in hopes of boosting reviews on retail sites like Amazon.

Once the items are delivered, these sellers post fake reviews to increase their sales numbers.

The BBB says another common aspect of “brushing” scams involves “porch” piracy.

“There are instances where thieves use other people’s mailing addresses and accounts, then watch for the delivery of the package so they can steal it from the door before the resident gets it,” the BBB said.

The BBB urges consumers who have experienced this to contact Amazon Customer Service to report fraudulent purchases and change account passwords.

For those wondering what to do with the items, the Federal Trade Commission says you can keep any items that are sent to your address if they contain your name and address.

NADMO must lead enforcement of Covid-19 directives:Disnet-Gh charges gov’t

The Disasters Network of Ghana, DisNet GH, the leading NGO on disaster management in Ghana, has charged Government to allow NADMO, which is appropriately clothed by Act 517 of 1996, to address the enforcement of COVID-19 protocols.

It is not the duty of the police to enforce COVID-19 protocols or to handle its violations; it is the responsibility of NADMO and the earlier Government places resources at their disposal to move, the better for us all.

The disease epidemics department of NADMO is responsible for the multi-sectoral coordination of the preparedness, planning, prevention, mitigation, management, enforcement, designing and implementation as well as monitoring of programs to develop and build national capacity on preventive health and pandemic interventions, among others.

DisNet GH is worried Government has not activated the National, Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Disaster Management Committees to manage the enforcement of the COVID-19 protocols. Various Disaster Volunteers and Disaster Clubs in Schools can effectively be mobilized by NADMO to play key roles towards ensuring that the President’s directives on COVID -19 are strictly adhered to in the national interest.

Though the Government has not been candid with the approach to fighting the virus as evidenced in their decisions to discontinue mass testing, contact tracing, refusal to commence work on the promised construction of hospitals, refusal to fund herbal cure, wastage of resources on COVID virtual concert, non functional COVID tracker app, among others, it is our duty as Citizens to put our hands to the wheel to abide by the protocols, help others to adopt the necessary attitudinal change and assist in contact tracing, among others.

Most importantly, for the various directives announced by the President and other key state agencies to work, enforcement must start immediately but with a human face and must be handled by the appropriate Government agencies- in this case, enforcement lies solely in the hands of NADMO and the various Disaster Management Committees at all levels nationwide.

The Corona virus pandemic is our collective enemy. Like any other pandemic form of disasters, it kills without regard to nationality, race, gender, colour, ethnicity, party affiliation, religious belief, wealth status, and educational qualification.

DisNet GH appeals to all Ghanaians to come together, burry their differences and unite in cooperation with the relevant agencies and other frontline actors to defeat the virus.

Signed

Humanitarian Ambassador

Tenant impregnates landlord’s wife and daughter at the same time

Residents were in for a treat as one tenant known as Reason Musiwechivi battled for his life after his landlord discovered he had impregnated both his wife and daughter.

Reason is the Bachelor and one of Mr. Nyauta’ tenants who has always been giving his landlord’s wife a ride to town ever since the lockdown began. It was reported that Reason was giving her landlady a ride on a daily basis with approval from his landlord.

The landlord and his wife are said to have been married for 20years with 3 beautiful children. The fire broke out when news reached the landlord who happens to be a teacher and he is always home of late because of the lockdown.

Nyauta first confronted Reason with the rumour, which he denied. According to neighbors, there was a huge misunderstanding between the landlord’s wife and their older daughter a week ago when the mother and daughter clashed in Reason’s room.

Ever since the clash, there has been a serious tension between the mother and her daughter which the husband (Landlord) had no idea about.

Months down the line(yesterday), the landlord’s daughter complained to her mother about her inability to flow during the month hence they had checks and discovered she was 2 months pregnant.

She confessed by saying Reason was responsible. Meanwhile, the mother was also carrying Reason’s 3-month-old pregnancy. The landlord was in the dark until when the wife went to one of the pharmacies to get abortion pills.

The husband (Landlord) was informed by the pharmacist, who happens to be Mrs Nyauta’s husband friend that he sold abortion pills to the wife.

After several confrontations with Nyauta, the wife made it known yesterday to the husband that she and her daughter are carrying Reason’s babies. The landlord was shocked for a moment.

Nyauta almost lynched David but for the intervention of the other tenants. The landlord has with immediate effect evicted Reason from his house and has sent the wife packing as well. The couple are yet to divorce even though they are separated. As for the daughter, she is still living with her dad the landlord.

We have been granted permission by the metro assembly to do business in cape coast

Contrary to earlier report that owners of some leisure facilities situated along the Cape Coast Ola to Elmina beachfront had no permission from the Metropolitan Assembly to operate, the owners said they had granted legal building permits by the same Assembly and challenged them to demolish the structures if they were illegally operating.

Mr Wood, an African American who had settled in Ghana after the year of return last year told reporters he had gone through the legal and necessary process with the assembly to establish his facility which he has invested thousands of dollars.

“Personally, apart from job creation, I’m also helping the local communities to develop. All the coconut trees are in good shape. I brought down about 10 to 15 old coconut trees but I replanted more than 100 to replace the old ones as demanded by authorities.” he remarked.

Fred, another owner asked reporters to go around to witness for themselves if the beaches and the coconuts trees weren’t in good shapes. “We are lovers of nature and can’t destroy nature. It’s not true our beautiful stretch with organic coconut trees along the beachfront, is now a sory site to behold because we have planted more to even replace the weak and old coconut trees.

Cape Coast is the hub of tourism and is blessed with various beachfronts and leisure facilities from Orange Beach, Oasis Beach, the breeze and Heritage Beach.
